A LIFE ACROSS DISCIPLINES

Understanding systems.
Keeping people in view.

I am Jacob Vargis—a Doctor of Science, Professor of Practice, researcher, and author. My work brings information technology, cybersecurity, and applied artificial intelligence into conversation with human behavior, institutional responsibility, and everyday life.

As a Professor of Practice at Marymount University, I connect scholarship with the decisions and challenges professionals encounter. My consulting and enterprise architecture work draws on experience across federal technology environments, digital strategy, and cybersecurity.

My perspective is also shaped by zoology, an interest in marine biology, and time on the Chesapeake Bay. Observation matters in each of these worlds: noticing patterns, asking better questions, and recognizing the consequences of our actions.

01 / SCHOLARSHIP & PRACTICE

Technology in service
of human judgment.

Research, teaching, and practice informed by the same question: how can complex systems better serve the people who depend on them?

01

Cybersecurity & human vulnerability

Social engineering, cyber situational awareness, and the protection of older adults. My research interests include adaptive countermeasures and the AL3RT™ framework.

Human behavior · Resilience · Trust
02

Applied AI & enterprise architecture

Putting AI to practical use while retaining accountability, traceability, and sound judgment. Areas of practice include digital strategy, secure cloud adoption, and systems integration.

AI strategy · Architecture · Governance
03

Teaching & doctoral inquiry

Connecting theory with practice through active learning, applied research, and doctoral mentorship. Encouraging students to make their questions precise and their contributions meaningful.

03 / THE LIVING WORLD

Attention begins
at the water’s edge.

My interests in zoology and marine biology find a home on the Chesapeake: in its seasonal rhythms, its wildlife, and the work of restoring a living estuary.

OBSERVE

Wildlife & natural history

Ospreys, herons, cormorants, migratory birds, and the changing life of the Bay. An invitation to look closely and understand what the seasons reveal.
